National Nonprofit Day: 3 Ways to Make a Difference for Kids with Chronic Illnesses

 In Inspiration, News, Our Mission

August 17th is National Nonprofit Day! National Nonprofit Day recognizes the positive impact that nonprofit organizations have in the community and around the world. For those who are new to CoachArt, or are looking for a way to give back on National Nonprofit Day, we want to share with you 3 ways you can make a difference for children impacted by chronic illness.

What is CoachArt? FREE ARTS AND ATHLETICS LESSONS FOR KIDS IMPACTED BY CHRONIC ILLNESS

CoachArt’s mission is to create a transformative arts and athletics community for families impacted by childhood chronic illness.

Since 2001, CoachArt has matched volunteer coaches with students for one-on-one or group lessons in arts and athletics. Currently serving families in the Los Angeles area, San Francisco Bay Area, and San Diego, our vision is that one day every family impacted by chronic illness will be connected to a community of support and an opportunity to learn and grow together.

Children living with chronic illness may feel isolated because of their condition. Frequent hospital visits and deficient immune systems often cause them to miss time in school and recreational activities. Families, overwhelmed by the cost and demands of ongoing medical care, often lack the resources to seek out or afford extracurricular activities. Healthy siblings are affected too when family resources are focused on a chronically ill child. CoachArt supports these families by offering free lessons in arts and athletics that bring a sense of normalcy back into their lives.

3 Ways to Make a Difference for Kids Impacted by Chronic Illness on National Nonprofit Day

Who are CoachArt volunteers? Coaches are volunteers committed to bringing joy to children & teens impacted by chronic illness. Talented volunteer coaches provide high-quality in-home instruction to chronically ill children and their siblings. The time commitment is just one one-hour lesson per week, over the course of 8 weeks. All lessons and materials are provided at no cost to volunteers or families. We also have group lesson opportunities where volunteers can sign up to participate in clubs and events as their schedule allows. All CoachArt coaches have completed an orientation and a background check.

What Kind of Lessons Can I Teach?

Some of our most popular lessons include but are not limited to: cooking, baking, piano, guitar, singing, arts and crafts, painting, soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis, yoga, media arts, and volleyball.

CoachArt In-Home Lessons give students a safe space to learn and improve a new skill with one-on-one instruction from a personal coach who cheers them on, and an outlet to express themselves and have fun.
